I was thinking about the post I wrote yesterday about the fitness trainers and thought I would do a follow up as I had a few more thoughts on the matter as my day went on. It later occurred to me that we are all probably guilty of these little health and fitness white lies. Seriously for those of us that are serious about our level of exercise staying fit and getting healthy, how often do we take the advice of someone that is shall we say less than qualified in the field of a fitness trainer.
How many of us have a work out buddy who we kind of follow along with and do like them because they are in a little bit of better shape than we are? I will admit to it, I have done it especially when I first started working out and I did not know any better I took the advice of people that were already going to the gym and working out. Does that mean that they were qualified fitness trainers? Of course not but the advice was free and they were friends so there is that certain level of trust and familiarity that we just assume they must know what they are talking about because they have been coming to the gym for a long time.
Let’s be honest the length of time that some one has been attending the gym does not qualify them to be a fitness trainer. Which brings me to another thought about fitness trainers and their qualifications which amounts to where they decided to get their certification from. To be a fitness trainer you just need to pass the certification course of whatever school or fitness organization that is offering that service. In some cases you can get a fitness certificate online?
A fitness trainers certificate online…… let’s think about that for a moment. I’m all for furthering your education and all the time saving money saving benefits of getting degrees and certifications online but a fitness trainer? Shouldn’t your actual level of physical fitness be part of the consideration when getting a fitness trainers certificate? Call me funny but I like to think of a fitness trainer as someone that is physically fit and can do everything they are telling me to do at a level that I may never even achieve. You know that whole practice what you preach is an important factor when I am taking advice from someone especially when it comes to my own health and fitness.
